RIVER TRIP!

Over the 4th of July holiday weekend a few friends and I drove down to the Guadeloupe River to camp and float. I had been looking forward to the trip for a few weeks, but approximately 30 minutes before I left work my mom called to tell me that there was a Flash Flood Warning for where we were supposed to be. I got worried, called Amye and Brooks to see what the deal was. We decided to head down anyway and if we had to get a hotel then that would be our back up plan.

We arrived at the campsite around 11pm, couldn't find the office, finally found the office but didn't find anyone that worked there. Now, Blake called earlier in the week to make sure they had our reservations, which they didn't, and told them we wouldn't be there until between 10 and 11pm, and they didn't seem to have any problems with that. But still, we had no idea what to do. We finally made the decision to set up camp and just deal with it in the morning.

We chose a spot my the river because that's what we had requested and it didn't matter if it rained, b/c there was a 6 foot drop off before you got to the river. (or so we thought) Well, right when we started to set up the tent it started raining. We got it set up and the precise moment we finished the rain stopped. Great. This was exactly how the rest of the next 24 hours went.

It sprinkled off and on while we hung out for a few hours then we decided to try and get some sleep around 3 or 3:30. Well about 4am it started POURING. And it kept POURING for the next hour and a half. Of course, being a worrier, I didn't get any sleep. Brooks and Amye were just as nervous as I was so about 5:30 we decided we had to do something. In the mean time Blake was passed out. I mean what if the river was flooding and we couldn't see it? All our bags were in the cab of the truck and all the coolers and chairs were outside by the picnic table. We had to figure out how to get the bags to a dry place so we could fit ourselves in the truck along with all the coolers and such in the bed of the truck. We decided to take the bags up to the office porch b/c it was covered. Blake was still passed out. Come to find out it was mostly wet up there too, but we made it work. We wake Blake up and head up to the office (thanks for your help brah). It's approximately 6:00am now and we finally find someone that works there. This guy's definitely a character, that's all I'll say. He invites us into the office, which is also a trailer house, (this is a VERY classy establishment if you can't tell) and we check the weather. The rain lets up a little, now it's only sprinkling, so we decide to go move the tent up a level. That was the easy part because all we had to do was the stakes up so the boys could carry the tent up. We put our bags inside the tent and decided to go get some breakfast.

It still isn't even 8am yet.

We eat our breakfast tacos, which Blake things are God's gift to man, and then decide to make a trip to HEB for "supplies". I think we're the only ones in there buying alcohol at 9am. Is that a good or bad thing. I mean it could be a sign of a good weekend right?

We get back to camp and it's dry enough to set up our canopy/tarp wall, but yet again it starts raining. Of course all our chairs are wet from being outside all night so we decide to put on our bathing suites and get in the river. I mean there's only wet or dry with no in-between and we had been wet since we first got there. Who cares if it's raining. Our friend Tobee was supposed to be coming after lunch so we keep asking "what time is it, where's Tobee?"

It's only 10:00. That day lasted for-ev-er.

Tobee gets there, the boys have their little bromance reunion and Amye and I go back to HEB to get seasoning for our burgers and more "supplies", ya know, so the boys can have their "catch up" time. We cook burgers, hang out, drink a little (or a lot in some cases) and then go to bed.

I wake up when the sun comes up (7am) after approximately 5 hours of sleep in 48 hours, eat a granola bar and go back to bed. I was not smart like Amye who went to bed early the night before. We get ready to float and head out right after lunch, sometime between 12 and 1. I put on sunscreen, but I guess I didn't get enough on my shins, b/c they got BURNT TO A CRISP. Blake decided to punch a rock. Ok, not really. The boys were gonna go down some rapids "wild man" style (on your hands and knees on the tube instead of sitting in the tube) and let's just say the rapids won. Amye took a nap or two. And we made new friends. A good time was had by all.

We cooked out again, hung out again, drank a little again and went to bed.

On sunday (the 4th) we decided to take a day trip to Natural Bridge Caverns, which turned out to be more expensive than I wanted to pay, so we ended up in Greune for lunch and a little shopping. Tobee left us and Brooks, Blake, Amye and I headed back to camp to float again. All day Blake went around wishing everyone "Happy America Day". People seemed to find it funny. Guess it was a new term for them. For the most part Sunday was a little more calm. We cooked out once again and after dinner we decided to go find some fireworks. After a 30 minute drive one way we found the fireworks stand. We returned with 600 black cats, 2 packages of roman candles, and 4 packages of sparklers. We had a good time.

We packed up on monday morning and headed out. We decided to go through Fredericksburg and Johnson City so we could stop for peaches and jerky and so we could avoid the traffic on I35. We "meandered" our way home. Stopped in Lampasses to eat at Storms and got back to Fort Worth around 4. I get home, unpack, and go to bed.

Here's a few things I'll leave you with - quotes from our trip. Some are old repeats from stories some are new from this trip. Enjoy!

Fantastic Photo Timelines

The idea of a photographic timeline isn't new by any means, but I've recently found some pretty fantastic ones. My newest find is this - One Family, Thirty Years.
click on the link to see it larger, it's really great.

Another great one is by Eleanor's mother, Nicole from Making It Lovely. How precious is this baby!

Miss James at BLEUBIRD VINTAGE has a very creative way of documenting her pregnancy. She even writes cute little notes to her baby bird.

I really love how much you can see people change just by documenting life with photos. I think this one is my favorite because she is very creative in her shots. I love the little labels of what week it is. However, I like the way the first two are handled because it shows exactly how people change over specific amount time. It really stands out when you wear the same thing or use the same expression.

I really want to start a photographic timeline, but I haven't quite figured out what I'm going to make it about. I'll be thinking and we'll see what I can come up with. I'll keep you posted.

Happy America Day!

Since I was at the river for the holiday I'm a little late in saying
HAPPY AMERICA DAY!
or 4th of july if you prefer.

When I got home from the river I had an email from my parents about a story my grandma used to tell. I haven't ever heard it, so I was glad to it was passed along to me. It's a cute story - see for yourself.

ONE BYGONE FOURTH OF JULY

Thirty some years ago, my mother told me this tale of her childhood.
She was born in Omaha, Nebraska, in l894. This took place sometime
at the end of the l890’s or l900. Picture, if you will, brick row houses in the south part of Omaha, on the fourth of July. Several families decided to have their own pyrotechnics display. Three or four young family men pooled a dollar or two and proceeded to the local fireworks stand. It was late on the fourth and they got everything for half price. I can well image that they got a whopping big box of same. When I was about ten I received a fireworks catalog and sent off for about $5.00 worth, which arrived in a box approximately 4 feet by l foot by l foot.

Dark approached and all the ladies brought chairs out to the back yard.
Children were gathered and arranged around the mothers.  The fathers prowled around the box of rockets, roman candles, firecrackers and assorted other fireworks. Several rounds of works were set off – but one of the gentlemen was a nervous sort, smoking a big cigar and casting ashes here and there. You guessed it. Somehow an ash dropped into the box and the whole smear went up at once. Rockets whooshing – Firecrackers popping.  Wow! The ladies gathered the children up and ran for safety, while the men manned the garden hoses to prevent the houses from going up also. No one was injured but it sort of took the pleasure out of the fourth celebration – however, one that was long remembered.

The local nearby park had planned a fireworks celebration. The patrons of the park said later that their display didn’t hold a (roman) candle to the impromptu display at the row houses.

When my mother told me this – we nearly died laughing. We held our sides. We wiped our eyes. It still brings a big grin to my face when I recall this story and the pleasure I had sharing it with my late mother.

A Beautiful Thing

I have been to A LOT of weddings in my day - I think the count is up to 15 weddings within 15 months and I still have a few of those to go. I spend a lot of time searching blogs and if my favorites list didn't include a few wedding blogs then I wouldn't be considered a girl, you know the kind who love's sappy, girly, romantic stuff.

My favorite wedding blogs:
Style Me Pretty - on which my friend Rachel's Wedding was featured a few weeks ago. I loved being able to witness this beautiful event.
Once Wed
Lovely and Gracious
Utterly Engaged
Grey Likes Weddings
Snippet & Ink
Green Wedding Shoes

Who cares that I'm not engaged and planning a wedding. I still love to get inspired by all of these beautiful weddings.

Last weekend my friend Lindsey had one of these beautiful inspiring weddings. The ceremony was just outside a small town, which I have driven through a million times. I would never expect to find such a beautiful place in this small town.
I wish I had a better camera, but I guess these will have to do. After the ceremony we got to visit with all our friends. It's always great to see everyone since we all live in different places now.
Christi and I got a little red after partaking in my favorite summertime activity.
We had great BBQ and delicious cake. Isn't Lindesy's cake beautiful? I think she made the little flowers. In fact, I know she made them - she's so crafty!
groom's cake - he LOVES Dr. Pepper
the candy buffet - party favors!
first dance
See what I mean about the venue? It's beautiful!
And finally, a picture with the gorgeous bride! Love you, miss Lindsey! I pray that you and Khurt will have a very blessed and fruitful marriage.

West Texas

Last friday my sister and I traveled home because I had to attend a wedding and we wanted to spend father's day with our dad. We both took the friday off in order to spend an extra day at home. We left on thursday evening and drove the 6 hours home. About half-way home we got to enjoy yet another beautiful West Texas sunset.
Have you ever seen anything like it? If not, you're missing out!

On friday evening my best friend and her boyfriend, Christi and Josh, came to stay with us because they were planning on going to the wedding as well. Josh hadn't ever been to Lubbock, so Christi and I decided he needed to experience the real deal. We took him to our favorite bar, Chimy's.
We asked him what he thought and he said "The margaritas are stronger here in Lubbock than they are at the one in Fort Worth." Of course we love the original better - who doesn't love a bar that's in an old house?! it has so much character.

So, we're old and left the bar around before midnight. Since Josh hadn't ever seen campus we decided to give him a moon-light tour. Plus we hadn't ever taken pictures there at night so why not right?
I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to do that..
I can't believe we hadn't ever taken pictures on campus at night... I mean EVERYONE takes pictures on campus at night. I guess it just took us a few extra years.

Being back in the LBK with my Bestie is the best! Love you!!

Hey Crazies!

This last weekend I went to a couple of concerts. On friday night my sister and I went to see Eli Young Band (my favorite) at Lonestar Park. We got there in enough time to see the last few races.

I hadn't been to an outdoor texas country concert in a while and was a little surprised when we got there. I guess there's gotta be at least one  Crazy at every concert.

Seriously?! Who wears a mile high mohawk to a TEXAS COUNTRY CONCERT?! This guy, that's who. It was definitely a sight to see.

Anyway, the concert was great, despite the crazy drunkenness, smoking and cussing.
Mike Eli, Lead Singer

Drummer wearing awesome aviators.
How cute is this kid?! It was his 3rd birthday. Don't worry he was with the band.

My sister and I realized how much we actually segregate ourselves from worldly and secular things/situations. I'm not sure I would have noticed it if I wouldn't have attended this concert. Even if it is a different atmosphere, I still LOVE texas country!

my Sissy and I

I've had tickets to the Tim McGraw/Lady Antebellum concert for about a month now which just so happened to be on saturday, the day after the EYB concert. Saturday morning I found out we were going to have 2 extra tickets, so I asked my friend, Traci, if she wanted to go. She said yes :)
Me and Traci
Allison, Julia and I
the rest of the world. it was so hot at this point.

I guess this is the largest outdoor concert I've ever been to, because I was amazed at how many people were there. I was so glad we had lawn tickets so we could spread out.

Love and Theft was the opener. I only knew one of their songs "Runnaway". They played a really short set, so I didn't get a picture of them actually playing.
Lady Antebellum

Lady Antebellum came on next. I love them and I love how many hits they've had lately.

Of course there were some crazies at this concert too.
she was dancin' up a storm!
this guy cared more about Tim's wife than he did about Tim.
Faith wasn't there btw.
it creeps me out to see people dancing like this in public..

She's not crazy, but guess who I saw!!
Melody! We'll definitely be hanging out soon.

And finally what everyone was waiting for...
the concert was at Fair Park and I loved being able to see the farris wheel

It was Fantastic - Probably the best concert of my life!

I had the best weekend!
